Acrylic Sheet and Polycarbonate Sheet: A Comparison of Advantages and Disadvantages

When choosing between acrylic and polycarbonate sheets, they may appear quite similar in appearance, resembling plastic materials. However, in reality, these two materials have significant differences. Today, let's compare acrylic and polycarbonate sheets to better understand their distinct properties.

Acrylic sheets are produced from MMA or PMMA, whereas polycarbonate sheets are produced from plastic pellets (Poly) using different types of raw materials. As a result, when they become products, they have different characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages.

Acrylic Sheets:

Advantages:

  1. Glass-like appearance and modern aesthetic appeal.
  2. Excellent transparency comparable to glass.
  3. UV-resistant or infrared-blocking options available.
  4. High resistance to weathering, staying clear and unblemished for at least 10 years.

Disadvantages:

  1. Requires specific installation hardware.
  2. Less impact-resistant compared to polycarbonate sheets.
  3. Requires proper expansion space during installation as it expands and contracts with temperature changes.

Polycarbonate Sheets:

Advantages:

  1. Lightweight and highly durable, with excellent impact resistance.
  2. Can be cold-formed without the need for heat.
  3. Easy and quick installation.
  4. Less expansion and contraction with temperature changes.

Disadvantages:

  1. Accumulates heat due to its light-transmitting property, causing direct heat buildup underneath.
  2. May trap moisture and lead to condensation, making cleaning difficult.
  3. Shorter lifespan compared to acrylic sheets.
